The Arches
A third party appeal was brought against the decision of the Isle of Man Department of Local Government and the Environment to grant planning approval for various alterations and extensions to a substantial dwelling overlooking Port Erin bay, which involved retrospective works and amendments to already approved developments.
Together with Counsel on the island, Philip appeared at the appeal hearing to defend the Department’s decision, which was upheld by the independently appointed planning inspector who found that the works would not unacceptably harm the landscape or neighbouring living conditions. </p?
The Arches was subsequently used as boutique bed and breakfast accommodation and featured in the Channel 4 TV series ‘Four in a Bed’. However, following the owners’ recent retirement, the B&B use has now ceased.
It should be noted that there is no third party right of appeal in the UK.
